Since its foundation in 1996, the Zurich-based casalQuartett has developed into one of the most internationally renowned quartets in Switzerland in over 1,700 concerts around the world. Its stylistic diversity and lively stage presence are exceptional features.

Trained by the Carmina Quartet in Zurich, the Alban Berg Quartet in Cologne and by Walter Levin in Basel, im- portant artistic impulses came from working with Martha Argerich, Clemens Hagen, Patricia Kopatchinskaya, Sol Gabetta, Emma Kirkby, Benjamin Schmid, Maurice Steger, Christoph Prégar-dien, Fazil Say, Khatia Buniatishvili, Nuria Rial, Regula Mühlemann, Katja Riemann, Suzanne von Borsody and many others. In addition to maintaining the core repertoire, the casalQuartett attaches great importance to the emotional closeness to the audience, the involvement of artistic partners from different areas and the conceptual design of the programs.

For the season 20/21 the casalQuartett has created a four-part homage to Beethoven, “Beethoven's World”, which, in addition to his work, also impressively portrays his contemporaries and musical influences.

The casalQuartett was awarded a.o. with the ECHO KLASSIK 2010 and 2015, the Pizzicato Award Luxembourg, the DIAPASON Decouverte, the DIAPASON d’Or and nominations for the German Record Prize, the ICMA Award and the American Grammy.

Members of the ensemble also implement this vision of innovative, lively and emotional concerts in their own festi- vals and concert series in Switzerland and Germany. The string quartet is one of the most versatile genres, which succeeds in making stylistic excursions into the music of the 17th century, the world of Tango Nuevo, jazz and the latest compositions, as well as expanding the tonal and content dimension through guest musicians, actors and through Dance and literature. From Stockhausen's performative string quartet with 4 helicopters to music projects with young listeners, but also through the frequent moderation of traditional concerts, essential features of the casalQuartett emerge that make the tension between tradition and innovation the mainspring of its work.

Through intensive occupation with the ideal historical instruments of the Tyrolean violin maker Jacobus Stainer and the fascinating - often unknown - music of the 18th century, the casalQuartett not only gained an international fan base, but also developed a unique quartet sound and style which sheds new light on the heyday of the string quartet between Scarlatti and Beethoven.
