BIOGRAPHY 2023/2024

Founded in 2013, the Quatuor Arod benefited from the teaching of Mathieu Herzog and Jean Sulem, as well as the Quatuor Artemis at the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel in Brussels. They have also worked regularly with the Quatuor Ebène and the Quatuor Diotima. In 2016, they won the First Prize at the ARD International Music Competition of Munich. They had already been awarded the First Prize at the Carl Nielsen International Competition of Copenhagen in 2015 and the First Prize at the European Competition of the FNAPEC Concours in 2014. In 2016, they were HSBC laureates of the Festival d’Aix Academy. In 2017, they were appointed “BBC New Generation Artist” for the seasons 2017 to 2019, and ECHO Rising Star for the season 2018- 2019.

 

During the 2023-2024 season, the quartet appears at the Théâtre des Bouffes du Nord, at the Opéra de Montpellier, at the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, at the Konzerthaus Berlin, at the Wigmore Hall, at the TivoliVrenderburg Utrecht, at the Gewandhaus Lepzig... And continues their international tours in Italy, Germany, the USA, Taïwan...

The Quatuor Arod is in residence at the Fondation Singer-Polignac.

For the past few seasons, the Quatuor Arod has been performing in the greatest concert halls in France and worldwide: the Philharmonie de Paris, the Vienna Konzerthaus and Musikverein, Berlin Philharmonie, Amsterdam Concertgebouw, Wigmore Hall, Carnegie Hall, Gulbenkian, Stockholm Konzerthuset, Luxemburg Philharmonie, the Oji Hall of Tokyo, the Salzburg Mozarteum... as well as in many festivals: Verbier, Aix-en-Provence, Menton, Salon-de-Provence, Les Folles Journées de Nantes, Besançon, Heidelberg, Rheingau, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Bremen Musikfest, Spring Music Festival of Prague...

The Quatuor Arod collaborates with artists such as violists Timothy Ridout, Mathieu Herzog, Alexandre Tharaud, Adam Laloum, Martin Fröst, Camille Thomas, Julia Hagen, François Salque... In 2017, they premiered French composer Benjamin Attahir’s first string quartet (commissioned by La Belle Saison, ProQuartet and the Quatuor Arod).

The Quatuor Arod records exclusively for the label Erato/Warner Classics with a first Mendelssohn album (2017), then a second album, dedicated to the figure of Mathilde Zemlinsky, with the participation of the soprano Elsa Dreisig (Schoenberg, Zemlinsky and Webern/2019) which was awarded with the Edison Klassiek 2020. Their album “Schubert” was released in 2020 with great public and critical acclaim. A new album around French music (Debussy, Ravel, Attahir) is released in the fall of 2023.

2023 marks the release of the documentary “Ménage à Quatre” by Bruno Monsaingeon, who follows the quartet in its day-to-say, and accompanies the musicians in a meeting with composer György Kurtág.

Debussy - Ravel - Attahir String Quartets

Composed a decade apart, Debussy and Ravel's string quartets make a very natural pair. Quatuor Arod celebrates its tenth anniversary in 2023 and, to mark the occasion, puts these two masterpieces of the Belle Époque in a contemporary context with a third work, Al Asr by the young French composer Benjamin Attahir. In 2017, Quatuor Arod gave the world premiere of Benjamin Attahir's Al Asr, a momentous work that draws its inspiration from Muslim afternoon prayers as well as the moment of intense heat midway between noon and sunset. "Al Asr is dedicated to my wonderful friends of Quatuor Arod," Attahir emphasized. "They have brought it to life in a way I would never have dared to dream".

Erato is releasing a DVD of the documentary film about the Arod Quartet along with the CD. It is entitled Ménage à quatre and was directed by Bruno Monsaingeon. His first experience with the Quatuor Arod was a true discovery: "Have I ever heard before such pure attack, such dramatic power, such variety of timbre and dynamics - all combined with an amazing sensitivity to phrasing?".

"An outstanding album," is Gramophone magazine's verdict on the Arod Quartet's latest release, a program of Schoenberg, Zemlinsky and Webern. With its new album, the young French quartet remains thematically in Vienna, but now goes back to Schubert's time. "We wanted to explore several stylistic phases in Schubert's life," the artists explain. The focus is Schubert's poignant Quartet No. 14 ("Death and the Maiden"), written in the last years of his short life and complemented here by Quartets No. 4 and No. 12 ("Quartettsatz").
