The violinist and Hardanger fiddle player Ragnhild Hemsing has been deeply connected to the rich folk tradition of her home country Norway since she was a child. Her unique upbringing, deeply immersed in the rich folk music traditions of Norway, enables her to be one of the first artists to successfully merge the instantly identifiable characteristics of Norwegian folk music and classical performance in a entirely new fashion.

Born in 1988 in Valdres, Ragnhild Hemsing began playing the violin at the age of five and shortly afterwards, the traditional Hardanger fiddle. She later studied at the Barratt Due Music Institute in Oslo and with Professor Boris Kuschnir in Vienna. At the age of only 14, Ragnhild made her debut with both the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra and the Trondheim Symphony Orchestra with Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto. Since then, she has built up an international career and helped the Hardanger fiddle gain popularity outside of Norway.

In the 2021/22 season, Ragnhild Hemsing will play at the Stavanger Chamber Music Festival, at the Operahuset Nordfjord and the Kode Museum Bergen in her home country. She will play with cellist Andreas Brantelid and pianist Tor Espen Aspaas, among others. At the Peer Gynt Festival, a documentary about her new CD project is being produced: a recording of Edvard Grieg's famous Peer Gynt Suite with the Trondheim Soloists. The newly commissioned arrangement for violin and Hardanger fiddle, by Tormod Tvete Vik was premiered in May 2021 at the Bergen International Festival and will be released in spring 2022 on the label Berlin Classics.

BIOGRAPHY 2021/2022

"Ragnhild Hemsing's emotional resonance still has an effect, long after the music falls silent."
Julian Haylock

Ragnhild Hemsing's extensive repertoire of classical solo works for violin and lesser-known, complex works for the fiddle makes her one of the most versatile musicians of our time.

Her album Røta (= roots), with works by classical Norwegian composers and traditional folk music on violin and Hardanger fiddle, received excellent reviews. “Almost too good to be true”, judges journalist Stephan Bartels and Alain Steffen writes in pizzicato: “Ragnhild Hemsing plays all the pieces with a lot of love and care, technically flawless but always in a traditional Norwegian spirit. The purity of the music and the meditative power, the richness of color and the barren but warm images of the soul appear automatically and offer the listener an intense and really beautiful listening experience [...]. "

In Germany, Ragnhild Hemsing can be heard on a rescheduled tour for her album Røta with her chamber music partners Benedict Kloeckner (cello) and Mario Häring (piano). With the Staatskapelle Weimar, she is going to play in subscription concerts, where she presents both a violin concerto and a concert for the Hardanger fiddle in one evening. Further invitations lead her to the Göttinger Symphony Orchestra, the MDR Musiksommer and the Munich Symphony Orchestra, with whom she appears in the famous Prinzregententheater and a guest performance in Kempten. In addition, Ragnhild Hemsing is invited to appear at the Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and in Estonia with the Tallinn Chamber Orchestra, and she will have a release concert for her new Peer Gynt album in Hamburg’s renowned Elbphilharmonie.

Her recording of Halvorsen's Fossegrimen op. 21 (Label: Chandos) with the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra and Neeme Järvi received great acclaim from the international press. Since then, the two have worked closely together. Neeme Järvi invited the young artist to make her debut with the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra in February 2012. Ragnhild Hemsing's albums Northern Timbre (Label: 2L) and YR with Tor Espen Aspaas also met with a very positive response from the press and the public. The duo’s recent CD Beethoven’s Testaments (2L) collected enthusiastic reviews. „

Important debuts in recent years include concerts with the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, the NDR Radiophilharmonie Hannover, the MRD Symphony Orchestra (with Kristjan Järvi), the Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra, the Freiburg Philharmonic Orchestra, the Hague Residence Orchestra, the Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra (with Santtu Matias Rouvali), the Belgian National Orchestra, the Düsseldorf Symphony Orchestra, as well as appearances in the Kennedy Center in Washington DC, in the Tonhalle Düsseldorf, the Tonhalle Zurich, at the Beethovenfest Bonn, the Risør Chamber Music Festival and at the Schwetzingen SWR Festival and in the St. Petersburg Mariinsky Concert Hall.

After her successful debut at the Beethovenfest Bonn 2013, Ragnhild Hemsing received the renowned Beethoven Ring Prize, which is awarded by the association "Citizens for Beethoven". In 2018 she has been appointed as a member of the expert group for touring activities for the Norwegian Art Council. Since 2021 she is an advisor for the Nordic-Baltic Mobility Program for Culture.

In 2013 Ragnhild Hemsing and her sister Eldbjørg founded the “Hemsing Festival”, which they have been running together ever since. The chamber music festival takes place every February in her hometown Aurdal / Valdres. In 2021, the festival will be rescheduled in October after its cancellation in February. You can find more information at: www.hemsingfestival.com.

Ragnhild Hemsing plays a violin made by Francesco Ruggeri (Cremona, 1694) and a Hardanger fiddle, previously owned by the “Paganini of the north”, violinist and composer Ole Bull (1810-1880), both of which are generous loans from the Dextra Musica Foundation.
